And Robbie Williams may be regretting the rash purchase of his Wiltshire estate... as he stands to lose up to £1million on its sale just a year after he bought it.

The 36-year-old singer, who is estimated to be worth £80million, has decided he ‘can’t afford’ to maintain the 71-acre country retreat, which comes complete with a seven-bedroom 18th century mansion, indoor swimming pool, helicopter hangar, library, two staff flats and a cottage.

Williams has put the sprawling country pile on sale for £7.5million with estate agent Savills, but would be expected to settle for an offer of around £400,000 less – leaving him with a £1million loss 15 months after buying the house.

And it seems the impulse purchase is not the only ill-advised decision the former Take That star has made.

His modifications to the estate, which was once owned by architect Lord Foster, have raised eyebrows among neighbours in Compton Bassett.

He has created a full-size football pitch in the grounds, and a dirt track for quad bike or ‘rage buggy’ racing through the estate’s parkland.

These additions were conspicuously absent from a two-page advertisement for the house that appeared in Country Life last week.

A source revealed: ‘Robbie used the grounds for his own interests, not really considering the impact on the picturesque estate.

‘It is, though, no wonder they haven’t been used in the pictures to sell the house in the magazine.

‘After all, football pitches and dirt tracks don’t really appeal to your average Country Life reader with millions of pounds to lavish on an estate.’

Williams – originally from Stoke-on-Trent – completed on the property in February last year after deciding to return to the UK from California, where he had been living for more than three years.

He admitted it was an impulse buy but was believed to have been enamoured with its location in the heart of crop circle country because he has an interest in the supernatural.

At first he seemed happy, saying: ‘It’s lovely down there and the people have been great with us.’

But one English summer later, he and his fiancée, American actress Ayda Field, 31, decided to sell-up and move to Los Angeles, blaming the weather.

The British music industry has enjoyed a moderate increase in sales for the first time since 2003, despite a continuing decline in CD purchases. The digital market contributed to a 1.4% rise in sales to £928.8m in 2009, with singles performing particularly well. Successful releases from Susan Boyle and the Beatles also buoyed industry sales.
Statistics revealed by the British Phonographic Institution (BPI) show that consumers continue to be drawn to online retailers and ad-funded services, such as Spotify. The report states that online revenues, including digital tracks and video sales, rose by 51.7% to £154m in 2009. However, a spokesman for the BPI said that this did not necessarily signify that the end was in sight for physical music formats.
"Digital sales now account for a fifth of all music sales, but you can see from strong releases by musician Robbie Williams and Lady Gaga that the CD is still the bedrock of the industry. It is too early to sound the death knell for the CD just yet," the BPI's Adam Liversage told the Guardian.
Earlier this year, industry figures revealed that the singles market enjoyed its best year ever. This was largely down to the success of X Factor finalists and the Christmas chart battle between the reality TV show's winner, Joe McElderry, and American rock band Rage Against the Machine.
Liversage said at the time: "Prior to their closure last year, Woolworths and Zavvi accounted for approximately 17.9% of album sales. Their demise meant that their were fewer places to buy music on the high street." Liversage now says that CD sales faired better than many predicted given last year's high street conditions.
The burgeoning success of online models such as Spotify has also given the music industry pause for thought. The recently launched social music site Mflow, which offers listeners discounted music when they succesfully recommend new tracks to fellow users, is one of the many ways in which consumers are being offered cheaper, alternative ways of purchasing music.
The BPI chairman, Geoff Taylor, was optimistic about the latest statistics, but warned that illegal downloads continued to have a detrimental effect on sales. "It's encouraging to see industry revenues stabilise and even show modest growth in 2009. But let's put it in broader perspective: 2009's modest result follows a five-year drop in annual income, and total industry income has not exceeded £1bn since 2006. The pace of growth of new digital services is encouraging, but the size of the market continues to be constrained by competition from illegal downloads."

Robbie Williams, Kylie Minogue and Leona Lewis are to sing on Simon Cowell's charity single to raise funds for the victims of the Haiti earthquake.

The music mogul has rallied stars including Rod Stewart, James Blunt, Susan Boyle, X Factor judge Cheryl Cole and winners Joe McElderry, Alexandra Burke and Lewis.
The single also marks a reunion of sorts, with both Williams and his former Take That bandmates taking part, although it is not known whether their parts will be recorded together.
Williams said: “I'm very honoured to be asked to contribute to the single. We can all do something to help the people of Haiti - and I urge everyone to do what they can.”
They join Mariah Carey, Miley Cyrus, Michael Buble, James Morrison and Mika on a cover version of REM's Everybody Hurts, currently being recorded in Los Angeles.
Fifty per cent of proceeds from the single will go to Helping Haiti, a fund set up by The Sun , and the rest to the Disasters Emergency Committee.

The single comes after a flurry of celebrity support for the victims of the January 12 earthquake that killed an estimated 200,000 people and left around 1.5 million homeless in and around Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince.

Last Friday’s Hope for Haiti Now telethon hosted by MTV, and broadcast across 60 networks, saw the likes of Rihanna, Jay-Z, Coldplay, Bono, Madonna, Beyonce, Bruce Springsteen, Alicia Keys, Justin Timberlake and Stevie Wonder performing during a live link-up between London, New York, Los Angeles and Haiti.

An insider said: "Robbie is desperate to get things moving quickly rather than hang around just to get a bit more money. Being settled back in the States quickly with Ayda is more important to him.
"He's already got a few people interested in the mansion."
The 35 year old star has previously admitted the house - which has its own helicopter hangar, temples and fountains - was an "impulse buy" when he returned to England after five years in the US.

Then I heard their voices and I thought, ‘It’s Tuesday. I bet you I’m going to rehab today.’“They came in and I think they were expecting a fight. They sat down and said, ‘Rob, you look f**king awful.’ I said, ‘I’ll go rehab, you don’t have to say f**king nasty things to me.’ They had a plane waiting for me. His live comeback will be screened in cinemas globally, it was announced today.
The star, who has talked of his reluctance to head out on the road due to stage fright, will be seen live in almost 200 cinemas in 23 countries.
The concert to be filmed later this month at the BBC's Electric Proms shows in London will be seen simultaneously in locations such as Latvia and Spain, with later screenings in Australia and South Africa.
The first major show since 2006 sell out gig Robbie's will look him previewing songs from his new album Reality Killed The Video Star on October 20.
Tickets will go on sale on October 9.
Williams's virtual tour is due to a deal between BBC Worldwide, the corporation's commercial wing, and BY Experience, which has pioneered such cinema events.

For his epic Close Encounters tour in 2006, the singer set a record by selling 1.6 million tickets in a single day.
Screenings of the show take place in Australia on November 6 and in South Africa on November 13.
The HD screening is expected to be the largest live music cinematic event of its kind in Europe.
Williams said: "It's very exciting to think that a one off performance I play in London can now be seen simultaneously by people all across the world".
Salim Mukaddam, of BBC Worldwide Music, said: "The Electric Proms is now an established event on the British music calendar and BBC Worldwide is proud to be able to extend the reach of the event to music fans across around the globe. In their smartest outfits, Mark Owen, and Jason Orange led the pack, with bleary eyed Gary Barlow also in tow as the band dined out and then headed to a club.
Earlier in the day, the pair had been seen arriving at a New York studio together with Robbie, but he opted out of the night time frolics.

He had flown from his home in Los Angeles for Owen's stag party in New York the previous night.
The pair partied in Soho House private members' club and were up the next day to go to a recording studio.
Robbie walked out of Take That 14 years ago, to the dismay of millions of fans.

The solo chart topper, who sent a batch of teenagers into prolonged mourning after leaving Take That in 1995, sparked wide gap celebration and a tabloid frenzy after being photographed meeting his former bandmates at a New York recording studio at the weekend.
The Mirror quoted “a source” as saying: “He is back with Take That in the studio and they’re all writing together again. Robbie wouldn’t be glad performing old Take That songs that he has had no part in.
“But if they can pen new tracks that they’re all glad with, they’ll record them and he’ll be back with them on stage.”
But this afternoon, the band’s spokesperson, Richard Dawes, cast doubt on the latest in a long line of reunion results.
All five were in New York for band member Mark Owen’s stag night, he said, and the studio was not booked for a recording session.
“They were there approving mixes for a live album that’s due out at the end of November.”
Williams, he said, had likely popped in to have a listen.
Reunion rumours have surfaced and receded repeatedly since 2007 when Williams and frontman Gary Barlow put more than a decennary of acrimony aside and revived their friendship.
Williams, who is about to release his first album in three years, has done little to discourage the endless speculation by reguarly flirting with the idea of a reunion in interviews.

In a radio interview with Chris Moyles, he said: “I was with (Take That frontman) Gary Barlow a couple of weeks ago and we watched the whole (Take That tour) gig together at mine and I just thought it's one of the best gigs I have ever seen,” he said.
"It was an amazing gig and I loved it."
Asked if it felt weird to look his former bandmates performing, he replied "Not actually.”
"It made me want to be with them in the band."
Williams saw his career stall while Take That enjoyed a second round of success without him. After leaving the band, he built an enviable career, racking up eight No 1 albums and six chart topping singles, while the pair dissolved. However when Take That regrouped without Williams in 2005, they found widespread success just as their former bandmate’s album, Rudebox, garnered poor reviews and failed to produced any chart conquering singles.

The pop star needed the promo for 'Bodies' to examine different conspiracy theories, but caved in to his record label's demand to make it like a TV commercial for a fragrance.

The 35 year old singer said: "The song itself is a big conspiracy laden song. Its where my head's been for the last three years, on the internet watching films like 'Zeitgeist', 'The God That Wasn't There' and '9/11 Was An Inside Job'.
"But if I'd put that in the video, the public would have said, 'He's definitely gone mental'. So I said, 'What do you think we should do?' And my record company said, 'Let's do an aftershave advert', and I'm like, 'Cool!' "
Robbie's eighth studio album 'Reality Killed The Video Star' is due for release in November, but the star is upset people won't like his brand of pop this time around.

This weekend the two British stars are both in America to wage a publicity war that only one of them can win. They have as much in common as a silk bow tie and a pair of tartan slippers but the struggle to win sales from the target audience they share may prove crucial to the future of the record companies that back them.
Boyle's arrival at Los Angeles airport marked the onset of what was inevitably dubbed "Boylemania" by the US media. The 48 year old Scot, who won fame on Britain's Got Talent singing "I Dreamed a Dream" from Les Miserables, wore sunglasses and blew kisses to fans as bodyguards led her through a crowd of photographers to a waiting limousine. His new album is produced by veteran hitmaker Trevor Horn, of whom Williams says: "He's added something I haven't had on previous records his genius." The singer wants his new music to elate people and make them "forget about who they are and where they are for 50 minutes".
Yet industry pundits are not convinced that Williams can make headway against Boyle. Releasing the album in proximity to I Dreamed A Dream is a big mistake for EMI, according to some, after a year that has seen the company's market share drop dramatically. "I am amazed they have elected to go up against this," said one industry veteran. "Maybe they think increased traffic into record shops will report in increased sales for them too, but I am not sure that works."
Gambaccini is sceptical too: "Susan Boyle has combined YouTube hits of 120 million, and even if only one in 10 people who has looked her buys the album, we are talking ridiculous numbers. No one can stem that tide. She has the whole international Simon Cowell Machine behind her." Cowell, the impresario involved in Boyle's rise to fame, has made an unexpected choice of song for his Scottish newcomer that seems likely to turn a cult classic from the 1971 Stones album Sticky Fingers into a middle-of-the-road standard.
Bookmakers Ladbrokes have already chalked up odds as short as 2-5 on Boyle's album making Christmas No 1 in Britain. The as-yet-unknown winner of the current British X Factor series is still 1-3 favourite to top the Christmas chart, with Robbie Williams far behind on 20-1.
For Gambaccini, if Boyle does beat Williams it will confirm the birth of a new age.

Both singers are trying to crack America for the envied top spot and unlike Boyle, it won’t be a first attempt for Williams.
The former Take Thatter has never been able to match his European success in the U.S. and is relying intemperately on his new album, due in early November, to secure this for him and revive his fortunes.

Williams’s EMI release of Reality Killed the Radio Star will go head to head with Boyle’s I Dreamed A Dream offering from Sony, which is being released two weeks later.
But pundits are already prediction doom for Williams, with one industry veteran telling The Observer: ‘I am amazed they have elected to go up against this.’
Music commentator Paul Gambaccini said: ‘No contest, it is Susan Boyle.
‘That is not an insult to Robbie Williams, it’s just that, freaky as it sounds, Boyle is the new artist and story of the year around the world. The interest factor alone will bring her many, many sales.’
Ladbrokes bookmakers have given odds of 2-5 on Boyle’s album making the Christmas No 1 in Britain compared to Williams’s at 20-1.

The Bodies singer has been invited to play at a particular concert the pair's singer Gary Barlow is arranging in aid of charity Children in Wants and plans to join his former band mates for a one off performance.
Williams who quit Take That in 1995, shortly before the rest of the pair went their separate ways said: "Yes, something is finally going to happen. Me and Gary have been hanging out a lot lately, talking things over.
"It's been absolutely amazing. I've always needed to be in a band ever since we split."
Grace Kelly star Mika is one of the other stars performing at the event at London's Royal Albert Hall and he is excited about Williams returning to Take That and has promised some surprises of his own.

Here's how it all went down: Robbie was photographed by two paparazzi's smoking a large roll-up cigarette on a jet ski at the beach. When his entourage realized the paps were taking photos, they got really pissed and there was a huge confrontation. That same night at about 3AM, three masked gunmen broke into the huts of the paparazzi, held guns to their heads and threatened to kill them. The gunmen stole their cameras, clothes, travel documents and cash. And of course the memory chips inside the cameras. Coincidence?! Police are investigating whether the robbers knew about the fight over the pictures, and are interviewing a number of witnesses, including Robbie. I sent a team of officers from Nassau to the island and I am waiting for them to report back to me. Robbie announces comeback album

Robbie Williams is hoping to win back his crown as Britain's biggest pop star with a new album in November.
Reality Killed The Video Star will be his first release since 2006's Rudebox, which met with a tepid reception from fans and critics.

Williams described the new record as "a killer". He said listeners would hear "old Robbie, new Robbie and a Robbie that neither of us have met".
The first single from the album, Bodies, will be released on 11 October.

Writing on his blog, Williams revealed he had rewritten one of his new songs in tribute to Michael Jackson.

"[I] couldn't get a lyric to fit on one of the new songs. When he passed away I rewrote it with him in mind," he said.

The star added that he had enlisted the help of lyricist Don Black, who co-wrote one of Jackson's earliest solo hits, Ben, as well as the Bond themes Thunderball and Diamonds Are Forever.

"I was having a tough time with lyrics for a little while," he wrote. "Nothing would come out.

"Don Black kindly came in and gave me a helping hand. He's the nicest legend I've ever met. I love him."
